What is there to say about Robert and Karen in this day and age? They've managed just barely to escape the paralyzing conflicts of the modern artist, enough to make... some rock music. It has not been easy. Just like Nickelback, they've teetered on the edge of disaster for years. But here they are, finally emerging in 2005 with an album, From the Nervous System, which seeks to reformulate the structure of traditional rock and roll music. (Though, most certainly, not for the first time). Robert and Karen seek to reformulate not through fragmentation (the spastic, jubilant shifts of, say, the Fiery Furnaces) but through a technique they call discrete succession. More on this later.
